Acrylic Nail Tips
What is the difference between acrylic nail tips and gel-x tips?
Acrylic nail tips are typically made from ABS plastic and are designed to be applied with nail glue before acrylic product is overlaid on top. Gel-X tips are soft gel extensions that bond directly to the nail using gel adhesive and cure under a lamp — no acrylic overlay required. The best choice depends on your preferred extension system and your client's needs.
Do acrylic tips work with builder gel?
Yes. Many nail techs use acrylic tips as a base and overlay them with builder gel instead of traditional acrylic. This approach gives you the shape and length of a plastic tip with the flexibility and finish of gel. Just ensure the tip is properly glued, filed, and dehydrated before applying your gel layer.
How do I choose the right tip size for my client?
Most acrylic tip sets include a range of sizes, typically numbered from smallest to largest. The tip should sit flush against the nail plate from sidewall to sidewall without overlapping the skin on either side. When in doubt, size up slightly — you can always file the edges for a more precise fit. Proper sizing improves adhesion and reduces the chance of lifting.
What tools do I need to apply acrylic nail tips?
At minimum, you'll need nail glue, a tip cutter for length adjustment, and files and buffers for shaping and blending. A good set of acrylic brushes is essential once you're ready to apply your acrylic or overlay product. Cuticle prep tools and a dehydrator also help ensure a clean, long-lasting bond.
Can I use acrylic tips for French nail sets?
Absolutely. French tips are a specific style of acrylic tip with a pre-colored white free edge, making it easy to achieve a consistent French look without hand-painting the smile line. Standard clear or natural tips can also be used for French sets — the white line is simply applied with acrylic or gel polish during the service.
How should I store acrylic nail tips?
Store tips in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Keeping them in a covered container or their original tray helps prevent warping and keeps sizes organized. Exposure to heat or moisture over time can affect the shape and adhesion quality of plastic tips, so a dedicated storage solution at your station is worth the small investment.
